Prevention methods for contact dermatitis include barrier creams.[45] [ Cochrane Clinical Answers logo ] ​ Quaternium-18 bentonite lotion may prevent or diminish allergic contact dermatitis to Toxicodendron species oleoresin if applied prior to exposure.[39] Prevention strategies for irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) include the use of cotton glove liners under occlusive gloves, barrier creams containing dimethicone, and high-lipid content moisturisers and fabric softeners in clothing-related ICD.[39][45]

The Contact Allergen Management Program (CAMP) database is available to members of the American Contact Dermatitis Society, and provides access to a regularly updated database of skin care products and ingredients. The database is limited by the number of products entered into it.

Careful attention should be paid to the risk of several barrier ointments that might elicit eczematous flares due to irritant components such as sodium lauryl sulfate.[57]
