Adrenal suppression

Clinicians should be aware that dependence is an unusual, although serious, complication of corticosteroid use. Due to the underlying disease itself or a significantly depressed hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, some patients should undergo an extremely slow corticosteroid taper.

Untreated adrenal crisis may result in permanent serious sequelae, such as end-organ damage or death.
