Gastritis

Patients on H pylori eradication therapy that includes metronidazole should be instructed to avoid taking alcohol to avoid disulfiram-like reactions. They should also be instructed to follow up after stopping treatment. If documentation of H pylori infection eradication is required, this may be done at the end of 4 weeks with a urea breath test, or at the end of 12 weeks with a faecal antigen test.

Patients with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced gastritis should be encouraged to switch to non-toxic medications, such as paracetamol if possible, for analgesia. If NSAIDs are to be continued, patients should be advised to use smaller doses with less frequent dosing.
