World Health Organization (WHO): ultrasound criteria

Severity of hepatic and portal vein involvement with Schistosoma mansoni and S japonicum infection is based on parenchymal appearance, presence or absence of periportal infiltration and vein wall thickening, and evidence of portal vein enlargement. Secondary finding of ascites or splenic vein enlargement contribute to the diagnosis of advanced disease.[62][68]

Severity of bladder and kidney disease with S haematobium is based on bladder thickening, calcification, irregularity, and signs of hydronephrosis or hydroureter. Secondary signs of prostatic or other pelvic inflammation contribute to the severity score.[62][69]
