1st line – 

antipyretics + oral hydration

Symptomatic treatment during the febrile phase of the illness.

Aspirin is avoided because of risk of Reye's syndrome.

Oral hydration is encouraged.

Primary options

paracetamol: infants and children: 10-15 mg/kg orally every 4-6 hours when required, maximum 75 mg/kg/day; children >12 years of age: 500-1000 mg every 4-6 hours when required, maximum 4000 mg/day

OR

ibuprofen: children >6 months of age: 5-10 mg/kg orally every 6-8 hours when required, maximum 40 mg/kg/day; children >12 years of age: 200-400 mg every 4-6 hours when required, maximum 1200 mg/day
