Patient discussions

Growth and nutrition are very important in the first year of life after hepatoportoenterostomy. At discharge from the hospital, children are placed on a high medium-chain triglyceride formula. If the mother breastfeeds, the recommendation is to pump and fortify the breast milk. Additionally, all children receive supplemental vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Families should be advised to contact their specialist for any of the following signs or symptoms:

  • Fever over 37.8 °C

  • Stools that are black and tarry, red, or acutely paler than time of discharge

  • Irritability that cannot be consoled

  • Acute increase in abdominal girth

  • Vomiting blood.
