Case history #1
A 40-year-old woman presents with a history of progressively poorer hearing in her left ear over the past few years. She noticed the hearing deficit when trying to use the phone with the left ear. She has recently complained of intermittent dizziness, tinnitus in the left ear, and vague left-sided ear fullness.
Case history #2
A 45-year-old man has a routine hearing test for work and unilateral sensorineural hearing loss is detected. Subsequent MRI reveals a vestibular schwannoma. He has no other signs or symptoms attributable to the tumour.
Other presentations
Patients with neurofibromatosis-related schwannomatosis without a family history of disease most commonly present with multiple tumours at diagnosis. A minority of patients with neurofibromatosis-related schwannomatosis may initially present at a younger age with a solitary vestibular schwannoma and only later develop additional tumours.
