Primary prevention
Early initiation of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) is highly effective at preventing progression of volume depletion in gastroenteritis, particularly when delivered appropriately as frequent small amounts.[12][13][14] ORS dramatically decrease diarrhoea-associated mortality in home and facility settings.[15] For athletes undergoing strenuous activity, particularly in high ambient temperature and humidity, prehydration and frequent intake of electrolyte-based solutions will compensate for ongoing losses and prevent volume depletion.[16]
Secondary prevention
General hygiene measures, such as regular and adequate hand washing, are extremely important to prevent the spread of gastroenteritis.
Accident prevention measures may be discussed with children and parents.
Adolescents who have been treated for exercise-related volume depletion should be counselled on the need for adequate fluid replacement with vigorous exercise.
Diabetes mellitus should be monitored and control optimised, with active patient and carer participation in discussions concerning therapy.
