Monitoring

Follow-up with a physician experienced in the care of patients with CGD is recommended. Special care is important during transfer from paediatric to adult specialists.

Patients should be closely monitored for any signs or symptoms of infection, with prompt aggressive evaluation and treatment. Periodically, CXR and/or CT scans and pulmonary function testing are useful to identify asymptomatic pulmonary infections and non-infectious pulmonary pathology (which appears common).[35][36] Regular eye examinations are recommended to monitor for chorioretinopathy.[53][54] Patients should see a dentist regularly.[18] Additionally, because of itraconazole and an association with reversible liver damage, periodic liver function testing is essential. Serum folate levels should be monitored in patients receiving trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole maintenance antibiotic prophylaxis.
