Primary prevention
Although the aetiologies of cleft lip and palate are multi-factorial, several recommendations are suggested. Avoidance of teratogenic medicines during pregnancy is mandatory. Furthermore, seizure medicines should be adjusted by a neurologist before conception, to prevent teratogen exposure. Antenatal multivitamins (including folic acid supplementation), anti-smoking counselling, and advice on the importance of minimising peri-natal alcohol consumption are strongly encouraged.
