Epidemiology

This is an uncommon condition and the exact incidence is unknown.[2] However, it is more common in women, with a ratio of 2.3:1.0.[7] Localised GA is the most common subtype and typically presents in women in their 30s.[3] Subcutaneous GA is usually found in young children aged <5 years.[5] The generalised form of the condition is the only type found most commonly in the older population and may be associated with an underlying malignancy, although this has been contested.[6][8]
