Prognosis

Non-necrotising gingivitis

Regular and adequate removal of supragingival plaque by the patient is essential for a good long-term prognosis.

Necrotising gingivitis

With 2 times/day rinsing with chlorhexidine or hydrogen peroxide rinses and tooth brushing, most patients achieve symptomatic relief in a few days (2-4 days). Patients who continue with good oral hygiene practices and treat risk factors where appropriate reduce the risk of necrotising gingivitis returning or progressing.
