Probiotics

Theoretically, colonisation of the oropharynx with non-pathogenic strains of Streptococcus species could reduce the incidence of recurrent bacterial tonsillitis. There are some indications for fewer episodes of group A beta-haemolytic streptococcal tonsillitis in children treated with oral probiotics, but randomised placebo-controlled studies are needed to establish their efficacy.[52] Addition of probiotics to penicillin treatment in patients with acute tonsillitis has not been shown to reduce symptom severity or to shorten disease duration.[52]
