Epidemiology

The incidence and prevalence of CRPS have been difficult to determine because of issues with diagnosis, nomenclature, and distribution of patients across multiple specialties. In Olmsted County, Minnesota, the incidence of type 1 CRPS was reported as 5.46 in 100,000 person-years at risk, with a prevalence of 20.57 in 100,000, and a median age of onset of 46 years.[4] In the Netherlands, the reported incidence was 26.2 in 100,000 person-years, greatest in the 61-70-year-old group, with a mean age of onset of 52.7 years.[5] A study from Korea found the incidence to be 18 in 100,000 in 2015, with peak incidence in people aged over 70 years.[6] In all three studies, women were affected more frequently than men, and fractures were the most common precipitating event.[4][5][6]

The incidence of type 2 CRPS has been estimated to be 0.82 in 100,000 person-years at risk, with a prevalence of 4.2 in 100,000, without a sex effect, in the Olmsted County study.[4] A higher prevalence of type 2 CRPS (10.8 in 100,000), with a female preponderance, was reported in Korea.[6]
