The incidence and prevalence of CRPS have been difficult to determine because of issues with diagnosis, nomenclature, and distribution of patients across multiple specialties. In Olmsted County, Minnesota, the incidence of type 1 CRPS was reported as 5.46 in 100,000 person-years at risk, with a prevalence of 20.57 in 100,000, and a median age of onset of 46 years.[4]Sandroni P, Benrud-Larson LM, McClelland RL, et al. Complex regional pain syndrome type I: incidence and prevalence in Olmsted county, a population-based study. Pain. 2003 May;103(1-2):199-207.

In the Netherlands, the reported incidence was 26.2 in 100,000 person-years, greatest in the 61-70-year-old group, with a mean age of onset of 52.7 years.[5]de Mos M, de Bruijn AG, Huygen FJ, et al. The incidence of complex regional pain syndrome: a population-based study. Pain. 2007 May;129(1-2):12-20.

A study from Korea found the incidence to be 18 in 100,000 in 2015, with peak incidence in people aged over 70 years.[6]Kim H, Lee CH, Kim SH, et al. Epidemiology of complex regional pain syndrome in Korea: an electronic population health data study. PLoS One. 2018;13(6):e0198147.

In all three studies, women were affected more frequently than men, and fractures were the most common precipitating event.[4]Sandroni P, Benrud-Larson LM, McClelland RL, et al. The incidence of type 2 CRPS has been estimated to be 0.82 in 100,000 person-years at risk, with a prevalence of 4.2 in 100,000, without a sex effect, in the Olmsted County study.[4]Sandroni P, Benrud-Larson LM, McClelland RL, et al. A higher prevalence of type 2 CRPS (10.8 in 100,000), with a female preponderance, was reported in Korea.[6]Kim H, Lee CH, Kim SH, et al. Epidemiology of complex regional pain syndrome in Korea: an electronic population health data study. PLoS One. 2018;13(6):e0198147.
