Epidemiology
Exact prevalence is unknown. It is more common in children who participate in sport. In a Finnish study, 21% of athletic adolescents had OSD, compared with only 4.5% of the non-athletic ones.[2] The condition typically appears between ages 8 and 12 years in girls, and 12 and 15 years in boys; males are affected more often than females. One retrospective cohort study conducted using a healthcare database in the Netherlands found nearly double the incidence of OSD in boys, compared with girls, (4.9 vs. 2.7 per 1000 person-years), with the peak incidence occurring at the age of 12 years in boys and 11 years in girls.[3] OSD is bilateral in 20% to 30% cases.[1][4]
