Epidemiology
Blepharitis is one of the most common ocular diseases encountered by ophthalmologists, affecting 37% to 47% of patients.[6] It is also observed in 86% of all patients with dry eyes.[7] A nationwide cohort study in South Korea found an incidence of 1.1 per 100 person-years between 2004 and 2013. The incidence and prevalence was higher in women and in people aged ≥40 years.[8] Demodex mites are an important cause of blepharitis.[9][10] In one ophthalmic outpatient study, Demodex infection was identified in 94% of patients, with 58% having the pathognomonic collarettes of Demodex blepharitis.[9]
