Parasomnias in adults

RBD is often associated with injury to the patient and/or bed partner due to very vigorous activity associated with the parasomnia.

RBD must be treated expeditiously to avoid this complication.

The adult form of confusional arousal is associated with violent behaviour in some cases, especially if one intervenes during the parasomnia.

Patients with this form of confusional arousal need treatment and close follow-up.

Bed partners and other household members need to be educated about the need to avoid intervention during the parasomnia and to maintain a safe environment for the patient.

Parasomnias disrupt sleep for the patient, as well as the sleep of the bed partner and/or other household members.
