Emerging treatments

Corneal collagen cross-linking

Studied as an adjunct treatment for infectious keratitis. There have been mixed results and further investigation is needed.[51][52]

Miltefosine

Oral miltefosine has been studied as an adjunct for refractory Acanthamoeba keratitis and has orphan drug designation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this indication. However, case series report variable clinical response and a severe inflammatory reaction.[53][54][55][56]

Polihexanide

Polihexanide (also known as polyhexamethylene biguanide) is a topical ophthalmic antimicrobial agent. In one phase 3 multi-centre randomised controlled trial, topical ophthalmic polihexanide was found to be non-inferior to topical ophthalmic polihexanide/propamidine for resolution of Acanthamoeba keratitis.[57] Polihexanide is approved in Europe for the treatment of Acanthamoeba keratitis in children ≥12 years of age and adults.
