Criteria
Staging of diabetic kidney disease (DKD)[1][48]
DKD is assessed according to the presence of reduced estimated GFR and albuminuria (as for chronic kidney disease). These factors are important predictors of DKD progression, cardiovascular disease, and mortality.[46]
Albuminuria categories
Normal to mildly increased: <30 mg albumin/24 hours or albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) of <3 mg/mmol (<30 mg/g)
Moderately increased (microalbuminuria): 30-299 mg albumin/24 hours or ACR of 3-29 mg/mmol (30-299 mg/g)
Severely increased (macroalbuminuria): ≥300 mg albumin/24 hours or ACR ≥30 mg/mmol (≥300 mg/g).
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) categories
G1: GFR ≥90 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = normal or high
G2: GFR 60-89 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = mildly decreased
G3a: GFR 45-59 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = mildly to moderately decreased
G3b: GFR 30-44 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = moderately to severely decreased
G4: GFR 15-29 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = severely decreased
G5: GFR <15 (mL/minute/1.73 m²) = kidney failure
