Epidemiology

The prevalence of clinically evident pituitary adenomas in the general population is approximately 1 in 1100 persons.[5] Growth hormone secreting tumours make up around 12% of pituitary tumours.[5] Acromegaly is a rare condition with an insidious onset, often resulting in diagnostic delay.[4][8] The global prevalence is 5.9 cases per 100,000 people, with an incidence rate of 0.38 cases per 100,000 person-years.[9] Acromegaly is often recognised in middle-aged men or women but can occur at any age.[8] A slight predominance of female individuals diagnosed with acromegaly is reported, but this is not consistent across all studies.[4]
