Secondary prevention

All patients are offered and encouraged to maintain influenza and pneumococcal prevention, particularly patients who have problems with significant weight loss and dysphagia. The prevention of unwanted pregnancy should be given particular emphasis.

Some strategies can be employed to help reduce overall risks of suicide: removing weapons and ammunition from easy access, keeping medicine allotments to modest (sub-lethal) quantities, and requesting a personal commitment from patients to call if suicidal urges become threatening. Such steps are particularly important for those patients who are impulsive.
