Screening
Screening asymptomatic populations
Screening asymptomatic people in the context of a cholera outbreak in a low- and middle-income setting is neither economical nor practical due to the likely large numbers of people who would need to be screened. Treating asymptomatic cases is not cost effective and may lead to increased antibiotic resistance rates in Vibrio cholerae.
Screening water
Water source samples can be cultured to try to identify contaminated supplies for treatment. This is a common public health practice and is usually done in central laboratories.
