Patient discussions

Patients with RTA should be advised that their condition is a lifelong issue, and, if it is not effectively controlled, it will have serious consequences. These include osteoporosis, loss of muscle tissue, and fractures. Therapy is also a lifelong issue and requires regular intake of alkali. The patient should be encouraged to take the alkali as prescribed despite it being generally unpalatable. Mixing the solution in cold water or lemonade with sweetener may help. Patients with hyperkalaemic RTA should avoid high-potassium foods and drugs that cause hyperkalaemia, including over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
