Monitoring

Monitoring for and arranging treatment for complications are important aspects of ongoing care. These may include corneal ulceration and secondary infection, accelerated dental caries, tooth breakage/loss, and oral candidiasis.

Management also includes monitoring for and managing systemic manifestations/extraglandular complications such as anaemia, renal tubular acidosis, pneumonitis, peripheral or autonomic neuropathy, and malignant lymphoma.

Biopsy of an enlarging salivary gland or lymph node may be required in cases where there is a unilateral persistent enlargement.

Individuals with the hyperplastic variant of Candida infection should have a biopsy of a mouth lesion undertaken, due to the risk of malignant transformation.
