Epidemiology
Rhabdomyolysis is the end result of any disease process that causes muscle cell (myocyte) lysis. Estimates of the incidence rate and prevalence of rhabdomyolysis are, therefore, not available. Statistical analyses detailing its diagnosis within each causal process are difficult to delineate. Traumatic injuries are a common cause of rhabdomyolysis; one study has shown some degree of biochemical evidence of rhabdomyolysis (abnormal creatine kinase [CK]) among 85% of critically injured patients admitted to a trauma intensive care unit.[2][4]
