Prognosis
DLE may occasionally resolve spontaneously, but if it is left untreated, most patients tend to have progressive lesions that spread to produce larger areas of scarring. With scalp involvement, permanent scarring and alopecia can result, which may be emotionally and psychologically disabling. Acute exacerbations may occur, particularly in spring and summer, most probably as a consequence of ultraviolet light exposure.
