Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can occasionally develop in chronic DLE lesions.[38]
Multiple methods exist for treating SCC and vary depending on tumour type, size, and location; patient history; and practitioner. They include surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, and radiotherapy.

Patients with DLE have approximately a 5% to 10% risk of eventually developing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).[2] The risk may depend on the extent and distribution of DLE lesions; patients with widespread DLE have a higher rate of immunological abnormalities and a greater risk of progressing to SLE.
