Patient discussions
It is essential that patients stop smoking and at a minimum reduce, if not discontinue, their intake of alcohol. The risk of recurrence of laryngeal cancer is known to be much higher in patients who continue to smoke. It is also important to work closely in the post-treatment period with a speech and language pathologist to rehabilitate communication and swallowing abilities. Major centres offer head and neck cancer support groups, which many patients find helpful.
