INVESTIGATIONS
SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
Difficult to distinguish clinically from SHPT. Both types cause constitutional symptoms and skeletal disease. Kidney stones are a hallmark of primary hyperparathyroidism, but may be absent. Blood tests are used to differentiate between the two forms.
INVESTIGATIONS
Low serum calcium in the presence of elevated parathyroid hormone distinguishes secondary from primary hyperparathyroidism (high calcium).
