Screening
There is no role for routine screening of susceptible patients. Primary prophylaxis is justified for highest-risk patients only. The role of surveillance cultures obtained from skin, respiratory secretions, wounds, surgical drains, urine, and stool is highly controversial. Such surveillance cultures are not used in North America but are popular in Europe and applied to intensive care unit patients only. This should be considered a research issue only.
