Cerumen impaction

The primary prevention strategy is to encourage patients to avoid using cotton-tipped applicators in their ears. Whether the applicators are used to dry the canals, to alleviate itching, or to remove cerumen, the unintended consequence is to push the cerumen medially and thus cause or exacerbate a cerumen impaction.
