Patient discussions
Patients should be reassured that NVP is a normal response to early pregnancy and is associated with fetal wellbeing and a good clinical outcome.
Patients should be informed that initial treatment is typically conservative and often involves dietary changes. While there is no specific diet, women should be instructed to avoid foods that trigger nausea. Many women find foods that are high in carbohydrates and low in fats to be more palatable. Salty foods tend to be better tolerated in the morning, and sour or tart liquids (e.g., lemonade) may be easier to keep down than plain water.[47]
Instruct patients that, if they experience persistent and/or worsening symptoms (e.g., any signs of volume depletion, such as palpitations, dizziness), they should make a prompt visit to their maternity care provider.
Women with hyperemesis should immediately notify their maternity care provider if they experience worsening symptoms or new symptoms.
