Patient discussions

Advice will vary greatly with the cause of the volume depletion. Patients discharged home from an emergency department or urgent care facility should be made aware of symptoms that would necessitate their return, including persistent or recurrent weakness, malaise, light-headedness, confusion, or a lack of improvement of the vomiting, diarrhea, or other condition that precipitated the volume depletion. Counseling patients to consume fluids or foods relatively high in sodium and to temporarily discontinue diuretic therapy or antihypertensives may also be appropriate advice.
