Patient discussions
Inform patients that resolution of bed bug bites requires elimination of bed bugs from their living environment. Symptomatic treatment can be provided if necessary. Advise patients to avoid scratching any lesions, and to keep the area clean and dry to reduce the risk of bacterial superinfection. Reassure patients that there is little evidence to support any role for bed bug infestation in the transmission of disease such as HIV or hepatitis B infection.[44]
Advise patients to wash all bedding and clothing in hot water and dry in a hot air drier. If bed bug infestation is present in the patient's home/living accommodation, eradication is essential. Advise patients to inspect and clean all areas where bed bugs may find refuge (e.g., furniture, crevices in walls, and mattresses). Professional extermination is often necessary.[3][6] Information for patients is available.[45]
