Criteria
Laboratory diagnosis
Diagnosis of Salmonella gastroenteritis is established by isolation of Salmonella from a stool culture or by detection of pathogen-specific nucleic acid in the microbiology laboratory.
Diagnosis of a chronic carrier state is established by positive stool or urine culture for Salmonella at 12 months or more following the acute illness.[31] Urinary isolation is not necessarily indicative of chronic carriage. Salmonella may cause isolated urinary tract infections, in both immunocompetent persons and individuals with immunocompromising conditions or urologic abnormalities.[79][80]
