Emerging treatments

Omega-3 fatty acids

There has been increasing interest in the use of omega-3 fatty acids in mood disorders.[201][202][203] There is insufficient evidence at present to recommend their use in bipolar disorder. Although trial data in young people are pending, there is some evidence to suggest they may have a role in the prevention of psychosis.[204]

Vitamin D3 supplements

There is preliminary evidence for the potential effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on manic symptoms. Following one 8-week, open-label trial with vitamin D3, young people with bipolar spectrum disorders and manic symptoms exhibited improvement in mood symptoms.[205]
