Epidemiology
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common conditions encountered in the physician's office, hospitals, and extended care facilities, and are responsible for approximately 10.5 million office visits as well as 3 million emergency department (ED) encounters and 400,000 hospitalizations annually in the US.[7] Ten percent of women ages older than 18 years report at least one suspected UTI every 12 months.[8] Many women will then develop a recurrent UTI, or persistent infection after the initial incidence. The statistics vary among populations but range from approximately 14.5% to 40%, with the highest proportions in the young adult age groups (18-27 years) or the elderly (≥78 years).[7][9][10][11] Despite an exceptionally high prevalence of bacteriuria in the population, these infections rarely cause significant renal damage.
