Monitoring

Children who have been treated for developmental dysplasia of the hip should be seen routinely by their treating orthopedic surgeon. Clinical and radiographic follow-up is required until skeletal maturity is reached. During the first 12 to 24 months of treatment more frequent imaging may be required. Thereafter, radiographs are suggested every 1 to 3 years. Long-term follow-up well into adulthood is required to assess functional outcome because hips with poor radiographic features can function well during childhood and adolescence but may later become symptomatic.[53] Furthermore, delayed development of radiographic complications has been reported.[54]
