Monitoring

Patients with an uncomplicated but symptomatic sliding hiatal hernia who are being treated medically can undergo diagnostic testing during follow-up as required. For example, testing can be done if the patient develops new or worsened symptoms. If the patient has a sliding hiatal hernia complicated with Barrett esophagus or severe esophagitis, periodic endoscopy should be performed.[52][53]

The follow-up regimen for an unoperated type II to IV hiatal hernia is not clear.

After patients have undergone a hiatal hernia repair, annual health maintenance follow-up will be adequate, with the ordering of diagnostic tests as indicated for new or recurrent symptoms.
