caregivers and family
caregiver follow-up and grief counseling
Parents, other family members including siblings, and other caregivers will be traumatized after the loss of their child.
Care must be taken when questioning parents not to accentuate or elicit feelings of guilt that may already be present, particularly if risk factors for SIDS were present and discussed during the investigation of the death. Parents and caregivers must be reminded that the death was not their fault.
Parents and caregivers are made aware of the support resources available to them, including support groups and grief counseling. Grief counseling specifically for siblings may be recommended.
Reassurance of parental concerns about having another child focuses on reducing risk factors for subsequent events and creating a safe sleep environment for infants after birth. More frequent follow-up than usual may be recommended, as much for parental reassurance as for monitoring the infant.
