Case history

Case history #1

A 40-year-old teacher presents with a cough lasting 4 weeks. She had low-grade fever and fatigue at the onset of the illness. These symptoms resolved but she continues to have a paroxysmal cough, occasionally causing her to have difficulty catching her breath. Over-the-counter cold medications have not provided relief.

Case history #2

A 7-week-old female infant with an uncomplicated perinatal history presents with a 1-week history of a spasmodic cough and low-grade fever. This morning she had a generalized seizure, followed by apnea and respiratory failure. Her father reports having a mild cough for the past 3 weeks. She received a hepatitis B vaccine at birth but is not yet due for other immunizations; her mother did not receive pertussis vaccine during the pregnancy.
