Primary prevention

A good daily nappy hygiene practice will reduce contact time with potential irritants.[13] Carers should be advised to:

  • Change nappies every 2 hours (or at least inspect for soiling every 2 hours) and more frequently in newborns and children with diarrhoea

  • Use a commercial cleansing wipe or water on cotton cloth to cleanse the nappy area; products with minimal additives should be used

  • Avoid excess detergents and friction

  • Have time without nappies

  • Avoid use of plastic underpants over nappies.

Secondary prevention

Continuation of good nappy-changing hygiene practices.[13]

Studies have favoured:[24]

  • cellulose-core disposable nappies over cloth

  • absorbent gelling material over cellulose-core nappies

  • breathable outer shell nappies over occlusive outer shell nappies, and

  • linings impregnated with formulations over plain linings.

Many of these individual studies were, however, open study design and therefore at risk of bias.
