Primary prevention

Since diabetic gastroparesis is a manifestation of diabetic autonomic neuropathy, measures such as strict glycaemic control, which is recommended for the primary prevention of neuropathy, probably holds true for the prevention of gastroparesis in patients with diabetes.[56] A consensus practice guideline from the American Diabetes Association makes the following recommendations regarding the prevention and management of diabetes-related gastroparesis:[57]

  • Selection of small-particle-size foods

  • Correction of hyperglycaemia (because acute hyperglycaemia delays gastric emptying)

  • Use of continuous glucose monitoring and/or an insulin pump for patients with type 1 diabetes or insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.
