Patient discussions

Patients should be educated about the risks of SE, and adherence with anticonvulsants should be stressed. Rectal diazepam may be prescribed to allow faster intervention for prolonged seizures (5 to 10 minutes) or for repetitive seizures without intervening recovery of consciousness. Physicians should counsel that recurrent seizures put people at risk for SE and death. However, existing data do not suggest an increased risk of SE or death after physician-supervised antiseizure medication withdrawal in appropriately selected patients.[12]
