Patient discussions
Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol and other hepatotoxins such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, high doses of acetaminophen (>2 grams/day), and foods that may be contaminated with aflatoxins (e.g., poorly stored corn, soybeans, and peanuts) in order to minimize any further insult to the liver. There are useful resources for patients undergoing liver transplantation, which explain the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score and provide links to supportive bodies and fact sheets regarding transplantation procedures.
