Patient discussions
Before discharge from the hospital after an attack of acute pancreatitis, patients should be advised to modify lifestyle risk factors. For example, patients with excessive alcohol intake need to stop drinking, especially binging behavior. Diet modifications to control hypertriglyceridemia and use of lipid-lowering medications such as statins are also important. Patients taking medications that can cause pancreatitis (e.g., mercaptopurine or azathioprine) should be educated about the adverse effects and how to recognize an acute attack of pancreatitis.[14]
