Pregnant women
Women are screened at the beginning of the pregnancy for asymptomatic bacteriuria and treated with antibiotics if present to prevent the later development of pyelonephritis.[1][22][39][40] Low-quality evidence suggests that treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria modestly reduces the incidence of pyelonephritis and the number of low-birth-weight infants.[22] Pyelonephritis in pregnancy can lead to preterm labor or loss of pregnancy.[41]
