Virilization that appears over a short period of time should arouse suspicion regarding a tumor of either adrenal or ovarian origin.

Patients with an adrenal tumor may also have accompanying features of Cushing syndrome. In addition to hormonal measurements, these subjects will require imaging of the abdomen and pelvis (computed tomography of the abdomen/pelvis and/or transvaginal ultrasound of the ovaries).
