Obese patients should be advised about weight loss; weight loss counseling and planning should be offered. Improvement in AHI may be lost with subsequent weight gain, and it is recommended that the importance of maintaining lower weight is emphasized to patients.[12][202][203]

Tobacco smoking, alcohol, and sedative consumption may exacerbate OSA and should be avoided or limited if possible. Sleeping in a nonsupine position may reduce the frequency and severity in some patients.
