Patient discussions
ED is a common condition in men, especially as they age, and safe medical treatments are available. However, not all men will seek treatment, based on their own personal preference.
ED can be a result of or a precursor to underlying medical conditions, such as heart disease, vascular disease, smoking, diabetes, depression, or hormonal problems. Modifying these risks can improve erectile function.
Certain unique scenarios warrant referral to a specialist for higher-level investigation, management, or focused counseling.
Acute cardiac events may occur after use of a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor; patients should not self-administer nitrates when PDE5 inhibitors have been used, as significant hypotension can result with concurrent use of these drugs. The risk for the shorter-acting agents sildenafil and vardenafil remains 24 hours after dosing, and 48 hours for the longer-acting tadalafil.
